Questions about overtime

How is overtime paid for teaching assistants?

Most schools pay extra hours at your normal hourly rate. Some pay time and a half, usually only once you’ve worked more than 37 hours in a week. You normally fill in a timesheet and get paid the following month.

Why do I keep less than my hourly rate?

Your pension is taken from overtime, and it’s taxed like the rest of your wages. If you earn under £12,570 a year (many part-time TAs do) you pay no income tax, so you keep about 94p of every £1. Earn more than that and it’s nearer 67p. The tracker works it out from your own pay.

Is pension taken from overtime?

Yes. In the Local Government Pension Scheme, overtime and extra hours count towards your pension, so the usual 5.5% to 6.5% comes off them too. The good news is that it all adds to your pension.

Do I get paid extra for being an ELSA?

There’s no set national rate. Some schools pay an ELSA allowance, others move you up a pay point. Add any allowance under “My pay details” so the tax is right, or update your hourly rate if it went up.

How much does it cost?

£5 a month, and you can cancel any time — there’s no contract. If you change phone, just type the email you paid with to unlock it again.

Where are my hours saved?

Only on your phone, in this browser — nothing is sent to us and there’s no account. Use the same phone each time, and tap Download at the end of each month to keep a copy. Tip: add this page to your home screen so it opens like an app.
